The signage industry is currently undergoing a structural technological transformation. The widespread adoption of COB integrated light sources and CNC precision machining has broken the bottleneck of small-batch customization for ultra-thin metal illuminated letters. This allows premium, lightweight, and uniformly lit metal signs to enter mass production, providing brand stores, office buildings, and commercial complexes with entirely new signage solutions.
Historically, ultra-thin metal illuminated letters have faced two major industry pain points. In terms of lighting, traditional SMD discrete LEDs are point light sources. When the letter shell is made ultra-thin, they easily produce visible granular hotspots and dark zones. It is also difficult to arrange lights for fine strokes, making continuous, uniform illumination hard to achieve. In structural manufacturing, manual bending and standard cutting processes lack precision. Ultra-thin metal sheets are prone to deformation, and splicing gaps are often too large. Tolerances for irregular logos are difficult to control, resulting in long production times and high scrap rates. Consequently, manufacturers could only accept a small volume of high-end custom orders, failing to meet the large-scale expansion needs of chain brands.
The scaled application of COB light sources fundamentally solves the illumination challenges of ultra-thin letters. Unlike traditional discrete LEDs, COB integrates LED chips directly onto the substrate as an area light source. This produces continuous, soft light, eliminating granularity and uneven patches, and significantly improving luminous uniformity. The module itself is extremely thin, perfectly fitting the narrow internal space of 15–25mm ultra-thin metal letters. It also features excellent heat dissipation, resulting in lower light decay and a longer lifespan. Certain waterproof versions can be directly applied outdoors. Indoors, they produce no harsh glare even when viewed up close at front desks or mall counters, perfectly matching the lighting texture requirements of premium signage.
CNC precision machining addresses the shortcomings in metal structure manufacturing. Through integrated CNC milling and engraving, the machining tolerance for stainless steel and aluminum alloy sheets can be strictly controlled within 0.1–0.2mm. Letter contours, snap-in grooves, and internal light cavities are formed in one piece, replacing extensive manual grinding processes. The ultra-thin metal edges, panels, and back boxes fit together seamlessly, effectively avoiding the old issues of thin-sheet bending deformation and uneven gaps. Standardized fixtures ensure that thousands of letters in the same batch maintain highly consistent dimensions, guaranteeing VI consistency for chain stores nationwide. This also shortens the production cycle and reduces the defect rate, truly realizing mass industrialized production.
The combination of these two technologies directly expands the application boundaries of ultra-thin metal illuminated letters. The finished letters are lightweight, with metal shells retaining exquisite brushed, sandblasted, and titanium-plated textures. At night, COB technology delivers a clean, smooth lighting effect, available in both front-lit and ultra-thin backlit options. They are widely used in chain brand image walls, office building lobby logos, mall counters, and hotel public areas. Some lightweight products are even suitable for installation conditions with load limitations, such as glass curtain walls and light steel keels.
Compared to traditional products, this new technological route is not without its barriers. COB light sources have higher requirements for heat dissipation design and driver matching. CNC equipment requires significant upfront investment and strict standards for drawing standardization and material selection. Low-cost, small-scale factories may encounter quality issues such as light source overheating and metal shell misalignment. The industry is gradually establishing supporting process specifications to promote the healthy adoption of these new technologies.
Industry insiders note that previously constrained by manufacturing processes, ultra-thin metal illuminated letters were more of a "luxury" for a few high-end projects. With the maturation of the COB supply chain and the widespread use of CNC equipment, mass production costs continue to optimize. Lightweight, exquisite metal illuminated signage is transitioning from niche custom projects to the mainstream market, becoming a crucial direction for the upgrading of the advertising signage industry.
